1848 Luck was also on my side in India where, three days before con- cluding formalities with a Chinese travel agency, I met a small group with 4WD (a Mercedes Unimog and a T3 VW bus) who were just putting together their tour through Tibet, China and northern Laos. I immediately decided to join the group, and as I was the only motorcyclist I could plan my own daily legs for the passes in Tibet, which are up to 5,300m high, and ride freely. Minor side trips or detours were always possible. I only had to be with the group during the early morning before departure and during the evening at the end of the daily leg.
